Our friends on the far right are up in arms over the benediction given by the Rev. Joseph Lowery during inauguration day for President Barack Obama.

Here is a transcript published by Crooks and Liars:

Help us then, now, Lord, to work for that day when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, when tanks will be beaten into tractors, when every man and every woman shall sit under his or her own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid; when justice will roll down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get back, when brown can stick around — (laughter) — when yellow will be mellow — (laughter) — when the red man can get ahead, man — (laughter) — and when white will embrace what is right.

Let all those who do justice and love mercy say amen.

Just take a wild guess as to what part has those on the right wing, led by the obnoxious Glenn Beck who has moved over to Fox News from CNN, practically screaming bloody murder. Rev. Lowery was working hard (using a little bit of humor) to show that so many people – of all backgrounds – are coming together and have come together to make Barack Obama our 44th president of the United States of America. But, conservative like Beck are having a predictable fit feeling that Rev. Lowery was attempting to say whites are racist. Only someone reading for the most sinister possible motive could find something like that on a day like that. It’s another case of Beck and other extremist conservatives that are too paranoid to truly heal the racial divide.

Also, for Glenn Beck to use the funeral of Coretta Scott King to take a cheap shot at Democrats, liberals, Rev. Lowery and others is shameful.

For many years, almost from the beginning, I was a fan of WDFN, a sports talk radio station in my hometown of Detroit. I was an avid listener who could never tune into 1130 AM enough during my younger days in the Motor City. That is part of the reason it saddens me so much that the station I used to like so much has apparently perished under the control of Clear Channel (a major corporation that was the holder of WDFN). The announcement was made on Tuesday and it became a sad, sad day for many fans of sports talk radio in the city (even though a lot of people knew it was coming or strongly suspected that it was coming. It sounds as if there were some management issues that may have contributed to the demise of the station as it continued to compete with the newer sports talk station that I had begun to listen to a little more, WXYT. It is a sad day, but I am sure life will go on in the business. I am sad for the Stoney and Wojo Show; it was one of the most popular sports talk radio shows in Detroit history. Mike Stone will bounce back somewhere and Bob Wojnowski will continue to do a solid job at the Detroit News as one of the papers top sports columnist. Hopefully Wojo will be able to get back into sports talk radio. Only time will tell. Hopefully, as Gregg Henson mentions, someday local ownership will take hold again and people who understand the business will be allowed to do their job. We’ll see, but for now it stings.

Former Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli (fired after he led the team to the first 0-16 record in National Football League history), who was at a Senior Bowl practice (as teams are beginning to amp up their scouting in preparation for the NFL Draft), wanted nothing to do with an interview from media members from Detroit.

Here is what Detroit Free Press writer Nicholas J. Cotsonika wrote:
“Move on,” he said.
But Marinelli, now the Bears’ assistant head coach and defensive line coach, spoke to the Chicago Tribune. It was classic Marinelli.

Clearly, it’s Marinelli’s choice who he wants or does not want to talk to – I doubt that anyone would strongly dispute that right. But, it does give some insight into what is inside of Marinelli’s head and his heart. First, he is not just spitting in the face of the Detroit media (all are unfairly joined at the hip, in the minds of some fans, with former Detroit News columnist Rob Parker who asked the infamous and in-poor-taste question). He also is spitting in the face of fans who supported the team and paid their hard-earned money to watch Marinelli and his team’s perform in Ford Field. It’s not cheap to go to an NFL game. Once again, Marinelli had a chance to be the bigger man and, once again, he declined. He should have just given a few brief words and moved on. Instead, he looked spiteful, bitter, petty and disconnected. Rod, let go of the bitterness, you just make yourself look bad.

In the end, Cotsonika still got the story.
